Mint authority and freeze authority explained (Solana tokens)
8 min read · Updated October 26, 2026
Mint authority and freeze authority are two optional powers attached to every Solana token. Mint authority lets one address create new tokens, so the supply can grow at any time. Freeze authority lets one address freeze any holder's token account, so that holder cannot transfer or sell. For a meme coin, both should be disabled (set to none), and you can confirm that in seconds on an explorer such as Solscan. This guide explains how each works, where to see it, how a creator revokes it, and the related controls that matter on Token-2022 tokens.
How Solana tokens are structured
On Solana, a token is defined by a mint account. The mint account stores the token's total supply, its decimals, and the two authorities. Each holder does not hold the token in their wallet address directly; they have a separate token account for each token they own, linked to their wallet. That split is why freeze authority exists at all: the program can mark an individual token account as frozen without touching the rest of the wallet. The vocabulary is collected in the meme coin glossary.
What is mint authority on Solana?
Mint authority is the address allowed to call the mint instruction, which creates new tokens and sends them to a token account. If the mint authority is set to a wallet, that wallet can create any amount at any time. The total supply you see today is only the supply so far.
Legitimate projects sometimes keep mint authority for a while: a game token with scheduled rewards, or a stablecoin that issues new units when dollars come in. For a meme coin, there is no such reason. The whole idea of a meme coin is a fixed supply that trades freely, and an active mint authority means one person can dilute every holder whenever they choose.
Worked example: what an active mint authority can do
Example only. A coin has 1,000,000,000 supply and trades at $0.0001, a market cap of $100,000. You hold 5,000,000 coins, 0.5% of supply, worth $500. The creator still holds mint authority and mints another 1,000,000,000 coins to their own wallet. Supply is now 2,000,000,000 and your share has halved to 0.25%, before anyone has sold anything.
Then the creator sells the new coins into the pool. If the pool holds, say, $20,000 on the dollar side, selling a billion new coins drains most of it. The price can fall by 90% or more, and your 5,000,000 coins might be worth $30 or less. Nothing about the chart warned you; the only warning was a field on the token page that said the mint authority was still active. The difference between supply today and what supply could become is the reason market cap vs FDV vs liquidity matters.
What is freeze authority on Solana?
Freeze authority is the address allowed to freeze and thaw token accounts. A frozen token account cannot send tokens, which means its owner cannot sell, transfer or use them. The tokens still show in the wallet; they just cannot move. With freeze authority active, a creator can let people buy and then freeze buyers' accounts so only the creator can sell, which turns the coin into a trap. This is one of the ways a Solana coin becomes a can't-sell token, covered from the seller's side in how to sell a Solana meme coin.
Why does USDC keep freeze authority?
Circle keeps freeze authority on USDC on Solana, and that is expected. A regulated stablecoin issuer has legal obligations to freeze funds in certain cases, such as court orders or sanctions, and the token's design reflects that. Holders of USDC accept that trade-off because they trust the issuer and want a dollar-backed token. A meme coin has no regulator, no issuer obligations and no reason to freeze anyone. The same feature that is normal on a stablecoin is a red flag on a meme coin.
How to check mint authority and freeze authority
- Copy the coin's contract address (its mint address) from the coin page or the creator's own post.
- Paste it into an explorer such as Solscan and open the token page.
- Find the Mint Authority and Freeze Authority fields. An empty or none value means disabled; an address means someone still holds that power.
- If the coin is a Token-2022 token, also check the extensions listed on the same page.
Many wallets and screeners also flag active authorities, and sasa's token check on each coin page shows whether the coin is mintable, alongside a can't-sell warning, buy and sell tax and the top-10 holder share. Coins created on Solana's standard launch curve are generally created with both authorities disabled, but the explorer check takes ten seconds and works for any coin, wherever it was launched. The rest of the pre-buy routine is in the Solana meme coin safety check.
How a creator revokes mint and freeze authority
Revoking means setting the authority to none. With the Solana command-line tools, the commands are spl-token authorize with the mint address, the authority type (mint or freeze) and the --disable flag. Most token creation tools offer the same as a checkbox at launch. Once set to none, the authority cannot be restored by anyone, including the original creator, because there is no longer an address allowed to change it. That permanence is exactly what makes it meaningful to buyers, and it is visible to anyone on-chain within seconds of the transaction.
If you are launching a coin yourself, using a launch path where these are disabled from the start saves a step and removes any doubt for buyers. How to launch a meme coin on Solana covers the launch itself.
Token-2022: more authorities to look at
Token-2022 is Solana's newer token program. It keeps mint and freeze authority and adds optional extensions, several of which come with their own authority:
- Transfer fee config authority: can set or change a fee taken on every transfer.
- Permanent delegate: can move or burn tokens from any holder's account, at any time.
- Transfer hook authority: can point transfers at a program that runs on every move and can block it.
- Default account state: can make new token accounts start frozen until thawed.
- Close mint authority: can close the mint account once the supply is zero.
For a meme coin, any of the first four is a reason to stop and understand exactly who controls it. A plain token on the original program with both authorities disabled has none of these levers.
What about metadata update authority?
Separate from the token program, a token's name, symbol and image are stored as metadata, usually through Metaplex. The metadata has an update authority that can change those details. It cannot mint or freeze, so it is less dangerous, but a mutable name and image can be used to impersonate another coin later. Immutable metadata is a small extra sign that the creator is not planning to change what the coin is. On Solscan the metadata section shows whether it is mutable and which address holds the update authority.
How this compares to EVM tokens
On Base, BNB Chain and other EVM chains there is no standard mint or freeze field. The same powers, if they exist, live in the contract code: an owner-only mint function, a blacklist that blocks selling, or adjustable taxes. Renouncing ownership is the rough equivalent of disabling authorities, but only if the code has no other privileged roles. That is why EVM checks rely on reading or simulating the contract, while Solana checks start with two fields on the mint account. The broader warning signs on any chain are in how to spot a meme coin rug pull.
Questions
What is mint authority on Solana?
The address allowed to create new units of a token. While it is active, the supply is not fixed and the holder of mint authority can dilute everyone else.
What is freeze authority on Solana?
The address allowed to freeze and thaw token accounts. A frozen account cannot transfer or sell the token, so on a meme coin it can trap buyers.
How do I check if mint authority is revoked?
Open the token's page on an explorer such as Solscan using its mint address. If the Mint Authority field is empty or shows none, it is revoked.
Can a revoked mint authority be turned back on?
No. Once set to none, no address is allowed to change it, including the original creator. That permanence is why revoking matters.
Why does USDC have freeze authority on Solana?
Circle keeps freeze authority to meet legal obligations such as court orders and sanctions. That is normal for a regulated stablecoin and not a reason for a meme coin to keep it.
How do I revoke mint authority on a Solana token?
Use spl-token authorize with the mint address, the mint authority type and the --disable flag, or tick the revoke option in your token creation tool. Do the same with the freeze type for freeze authority.
Is a Solana token safe if mint and freeze authority are revoked?
It removes two major risks, but not all. Check Token-2022 extensions, holder concentration and liquidity too, and remember that holders can still sell.
